N.E.W.T.'s Magical Readathon 2019

Get you a drink (possibly a butterbeer), a snack (chocolate frog or two..maybe? something else?) and prepare to do some reading! I got long winded with this one! (Or, you can just get some plain old Muggle treats and relax in a normal old muggle chair, bed or couch) 🤦‍♀️😂

Okay, this is going to be hard for me to explain in a blog. During the O.W.L's, I think I did a video for my announcement video and just did the wrap up for it here. So, I am not quite sure how to set this up. I will definitely share the video announcement by Book Roast (her channel linked) towards the end of this blog. If you want to see and/or print out the list of careers, etc, they will be in her description. I will post what I can and print screen some things. Whatever is print screened, know that ALL CREDIT goes to Book Roast, as she is the creator of the O.W.L.'s & N.E.W.T.'s readathons, Guidebooks, Prompts, Letter, etc.

Now, to participate in the N.E.W.T.'s, you have to have passed the O.W.L.'s that took place in April. You could have done the make up's between then and July if you wanted to participate in August. Or, you can just do O.W.L.'s in August and N.E.W.T.'s in September I guess (but I would comment on her video to make sure that is okay but I don't see why it wouldn't be but hey, it's her readathons, so her rules! lol)

But, okay, now that I got that out the way a little bit....

On to what career(s) I ended up choosing...well, after a little explanation on how I made my decision.

I wanted to do either Healer or Herbologist but I think I had to pass Ancient Runes during the O.W.L.'s for at least one and I didn't do that one because I didn't have any retellings. Well, I did at the time I think but I had already read that book and didn't like it well enough to reread it. Or, they were a bit too many prompts I would have had to do and I wanted to relax and not over do it with this readathon. If I get past one of the careers, I will try to go for the second, if I get those done, I may try for others. I will take it bit by bit. I also reserve the right to change my mind about my careers before, during, and after the readathon is over! lol...

I put them in the order I plan on taking a shot at them. I like having options so that I don't get frustrated with trying to read books I may not like or be in the mood for. Hopefully I will be able to have a bit more options at the start of the readathon or soon after it starts, but that depends on if my wallet allows that or not..lol... At the same time though, I'd like to get more books off of my physical shelf but I still have some wiggle room with series I want to finish but need to get the books for.

My Rambles:

(I started this book towards the end of April but had to put it down in early May because I was losing interest & just needed a break)

I liked it but it was not a favorite by any means. I loved the characters though. I just didn't have much love for it as I did with Warbreaker. I think my reading Warbreaker, helped me to understand this book a bit more. So, I am glad I read it first because if I hadn't, I may not have finished this book because I didn't like it as much but also, because I do understand things more. I didn't dislike Mistborn, it just wasn't as fun for me as previous mentioned. 

Maybe one day, I may decide to reread this book. When I am ready for the 'denseness' of it all. Seems like he writes a lot of books in the "same world"..maybe not the exact same characters but the "Lord Rulers", "Inquisitors", etc. I am still interested in trying the second and third book in this series. I will take it book by book on whether I continue or not. This may have been better if it were about 100-150 pages shorter. It will make you root for everyone in this book wanting to do right by the people and get rid of powers that be that have a negative hold on the people they "rule over". I loved Vin's growth throughout the book and watching her confidence begin to grow as she began to see why some did what they did. I think she even began to understand some betrayals that took place throughout her life (not too much of a spoiler, you know books like this, will have some betrayals along the way). There was some level of "love interest" in the book but didn't dominate the story. So, for those that like their fantasy with character building & light on the romance, this would be perfect. They do focus a lot on the characters themselves. I don't remember a whole lot speaking of the world itself but in this particular book,it has an "allomancy" chart and things in alphabetical order explaining what is what (i.e.- what a "coinshot" is). Reading it, you should get some understanding of the world they live in without an issue but as I stated before, reading Warbreaker helped me understand a lot. There were quite a few differences of course but the things that may have confused me, were still similar enough for me to go into it without a lot of questions later. 

I liked the narrator but I kept having to slow down the audio book down to 1.2-1.6 because his slight accent made it hard to understand some parts.This may have been a better book with dual narrators...maybe....because it was sometimes a dual point of view but mostly Vin's (female). But, that's just my personal opinion. I could also be wrong. Especially seeing that the POV would change in the middle of a chapter.

The ending was...well....a good one! That's all I will say on that one! :o)

It will be a while before I go on to book two in this series but I do have the second and third books already as I had found them in my favorite used book store for $3.00 for the box set of three. I had my  favorite cover at the time but got rid of it after I found the box set. I didn't see the point of having two copies of the same book. If I finish all three books and find the copies I love for those three, I will replace them then and donate these I have some where else or put them in a 'little free library'. I know these books can be kind of hard to find at a good price and like so many, I am on a tight budget, so, why not donate somewhere that someone can get them for a good price or free (yes, there is the library, but if people don't have that easy access to the local library, for any reason, it's good to have used book stores, little free libraries, etc..plus, some, like me, like owning some of their favorites). If I get through the third book and enjoy it, I will look for the fourth book & so on. 

Thanks for reading this. If you haven't read his books, they are worth the reading! If you don't know where to start...Try Warbreaker (my thoughts linked). It's not in a series yet and some of the characters are really funny. Still dense but it was hard to completely put down, even when I wanted to read other books and I think I did but picked it back up again soon after.

Well, my ramblings are done. And, I actually was able to give better ideas on what I thought about the book! lol..Still went on a ramble beyond the book, but, I guess that's how I do sometimes....

My Thoughts:

Two Best Friends. Two Guys. A Podcast. What could possibly go wrong?!

Of course, I really, really liked it. Kasie West is one of my auto buy authors. I can say that some parts of this book may bother people but I actually liked it because it took time for things to develop and get figured out. I can understand also what it may be like to deal with what some characters were dealing with. Wanting to respect others while still feeling the things that are being felt (confused yet?!? lol). I am trying my best to give what's going on without giving what's going on. So, I will stop before I get more confusing!

I loved all of the characters. Ones I wasn't sure about, I eventually ended up liking more or just felt neutral about. It was good to see Kate step outside her box and do things she was uncomfortable with. Step out beyond the fear. Something I know I also need to learn to do and have been trying a little bit. As someone who has anxiety, that can be extremely hard to step out on some things. But, small steps right? Now, there was no mention of anxiety in the book, but it was still good to know she got passed her initial leeriness and did it anyway, then, ended up enjoying it.

Now, it's just about me getting to her newest book Maybe This Time (Released 7/9/19) and getting it read! The last book I read about a wedding planner (Once & For All by Sarah Dessen), I really enjoyed so I hope I enjoy this as well. (My thoughts on Once & For All if anyone is interested).

But, that's it..Not a whole lot of rambling this time. But not a whole lot to say either without giving spoilers. Not the best blogger in the world but hey, it's just about saying what you can and enjoying it right? I have no one else to talk to about books so I have to ramble on here...Like I am doing now! 😂

If you haven't read this book yet and been wanting to get into it...Please pick it up and give it a chance. As always, just go in hoping for the best but not have too high expectations and maybe it can be a really enjoyable read!

My Thoughts:

Not a whole lot to say about the audio book except that I liked her well enough. I was able to get it to a 2.0 speed and still understand her as long as I paid attention to the audio book.  

This one was a lot better than book 2. Although, I do believe I may need to reread this one day because I think there are some parts I missed while listening to it. There was at least 2, maybe 3 times I had to take the audio book back to the beginning of a chapter because I had zoned out for so long. 

I'm glad that I pushed through book two because I would have missed this ending! I started this trilogy during a time that I loved Fantasy books around angels. I think I still kind of do. Now though, I think I am slowly pulling away from fantasy. I still gravitate towards it when I want some action and romance though. Although I love contemporary romance a lot more than I used to, it's still something I find myself getting bored with when I read "too much" of it, so, I have to go back to what I know and love since starting to read YA consistently in 2009 (I'd read it from time to time not realizing that it was something actually designated towards Young Adults).

There were so many characters in this series, especially in this book, I can't really pinpoint any other characters that I liked a lot beyond Alex, Seb & Willow. Some, I had even forgotten about from the first book because when I picked up the last two, I didn't reread the first. I remembered enough of the book to be able to jump right in believe it or not even though I hadn't read the book in at least 7-8 years. 

If you like fantasy around angels, this trilogy is well worth the try. Just know that book two has the "typical" second book syndrome but just do what you can to power through it if it fits that for you. Get the audio book from scribd, Audible or even your library if they have it. That'll make it easier. It surely has made things easier for me with many books. If I had to sit and read every book like I used to, I probably wouldn't get as much done because I am still a bit of a slow reader and I don't always read everyday. So, audio books help a lot..even on those struggle days or weeks I don't want to read. If audio books aren't for you, then that is fine too. No pushing!

The Reading Rush 2019

I will do my best to participate in The Reading Rush this year even though the N.E.W.T.'s will be soon after (I will do a post for that as soon as I can). Although I should actually skip this one so I can be together for N.E.W.T.'s but at the same time, it will prepare me for what I need to do for August. I will not be pushing myself during this readathon. I will try to get at least two books done but I don't want to get burned out again.

Okay...I digress a bit...

Quick Explanation:
It has changed from Booktubeathon so that everyone can feel more included because almost every year, people would ask if they could participate even though they don't do videos. This was created by Ariel and Raeleen (padfootandprongs07) about 6 years ago and takes place every summer (explained in first video below) and takes place over a week (This year: 7/22-7/28/19).

Next:
I won't be putting my TBR here because I am still not 100% sure what I want to do but I do have some idea but that could change tomorrow!

My Thoughts:

Seasonal Challenge: Summer 2019: (H) for Jenny Han

Audio:
I liked the way she read it. She did the voices pretty well, except for Chris (which I love her!), I kept thinking she was reading for a male and not a female sometimes. lol 

Book:

Throughout the book, Josh was my favorite, then John makes an appearance and my alliance shifts just a bit. Just throughout the book, I was so not fond of Peter. And definitely didn't like Genevieve! At! All! 

And although I understand Kitty is just a kid but I found her mighty annoying in both books. Made me want to pop her little behind for her mouth and overly nosiness! Sometimes though, I do agree but most of the time, her age shows and that she doesn't always get it! Yes, I know, this is just a fiction but still, she was frustrating! lol I think also that some things needed to be explained, even if just a few times throughout the book. Maybe me as a mom, I tried to explain things to my sons as they got older. I always tried to keep it age appropriate of course. Now that they're older, I can be a bit more out spoken because I have a late teen and a 20 something. 

But, I digress....

Overall, I really enjoyed the book. I found myself really wanting the final book before it even ended. I was like that with The Summer I Turned Pretty** but with that one, I wanted the last two before I even finished the first and ordered them then! Unfortunately, I couldn't get it because my finances were yelling no! lol...There's actually a few books I'd like to get...All part of a series (which I only allow myself to do..books in series & books that have been on my TBR so long).

Peter? Redeemed himself just a bit. We'll see what happens in the next one...Hopefully sooner rather than later.

Audio:

I like her voice for this book. The first couple of chapters, I think I would have given up if it wasn't for the audio book. 

Book:

☼This book started off weak for me for the first couple of chapters or so, had me a bit nervous about if I was going to finish it or not but by chapter 3 or 4, it started getting a bit better. Once another character showed up, it picked up that much more.
☼When someone in the book says "Yum" directed at one of the characters, it's nice to know that I am not the only one who gives heavy eye 'rollage'. I just think it's annoying when people say "Yum" towards humans like their, a piece of pie. *cringe*
☼I had to take a break from the book for a bit there but once I picked it back up, it was easy to get through. It wasn't a bad book, I guess I just wasn't feeling it at the time. It felt forced because I was reading it for a readathon. I think I just needed a break and for the readathon to be over for me to get into it again.
☼I read some reviews that people saw slut shaming in this book. I didn't see that. I just saw someone coming into their own reality of the things they did. Someone admitting to themselves that they needed to get their crap together. 
☼The book had it's slow times and wishing we weren't inside Reagan's head so much. Sometimes it was a bit frustrating. Maybe because I am in my head so much and it's hard to share the thoughts I have and hard to get my thoughts together when trying to let people know what I am thinking or feeling.
☼I really did enjoy the friendship between Dee & Reagan. I also loved Matt. The few times Dee's mother was brought up in the book, I loved her too.

It's rare that I find a quote I love in fiction, at least from what I remember. 

My favorite quote in the entire book? 

"...You're just a broken winged bird. And there are two things you can do with broken wings: You can roll over and die, or you can lay low, heal and start fresh" -Mrs Montgomery

This is something I really want to remember & it fits so much right now. That "Aha Moment" Oprah is always saying when something clicks?!? This is one of them for me!

*Perfect Chemistry: I went into this book hoping I would at least like it enough to finish it but ended up loving it plus, it gave me a nostalgic feeling of happier times when I tried to read it about 8-10+ years ago but couldn't get into it at the time. I think that adds to why I loved it so much mostly. Plus, when the times I was out and about listening to it, I was just not stressed and just enjoying my day in peace (spent most of the time listening to it while I was riding around!

** Biggest Disappointment: Although I didn't expect much from Allegiant, it was still a big disappointment because of how boring it was and the ending (Which was spoiled for me by a booktuber that I forget who it was).
Angel Fire, I had hopes that it would get better for me as it went along and that it was just me the first time I tried to read it not long after it came out (within the first year). But, it wasn't just me, it was the second book syndrome. Hopefully I will be able to get to Angel Fever this month!

*Black Like Me: I wasn't sure about this book at first but once I started listening to this book, I really did end up loving it. Not perfect of course but it was still really, really good in my opinion.

**Dean Koontz: I put him down as my new favorite author because I read/listened to my first book by Dean Koontz this year (The Taking) and really enjoyed it so I am so beyond willing to try more of his books. Will I like them all? Probably not. But I am willing to get through as many as possible and hope I enjoy more of them than I don't. 

**Newest fictional crush: Being that I am a 44 year old woman (with a teen & 20 something), who reads a lot of YA, I can't really say that I have a crush on a teenager (that would be creepy and gross), but what I can say that is that I find him to be that sweet young man every parent would want their daughter to bring home. So, no, I don't have an actual crush but I do think he is the sweetest young man so far this year. Well, one of the first I could recall just by looking at the books I read this year.

*New Favorite Characters:
Ambrose- I loved him for his joy of just being who he is and not really being apologetic about it. When it was time for him to look at things a bit differently and see if there needs to be a change, he did. Naturally, there is only so much that can be said in a span of a book but it was great to see his much happiness in one book,especially at such a young age.
